Abstract: This paper investigates the potential of applying the study of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) via a “Social
System Design” approach to legal issues. A problem when considering AI legislation is that many existing laws were
written before the development of AI technologies. To address this issue, we propose examining the effectiveness of laws through the Social System Design approach. Specifically, we will use the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to analyze if any legal gaps emerge when it is applied to social robots. To do so we will employ HRI experiments.
